In the 12th century Bernard of Clairvaux preached the Second Crusade in Vezelay. The village harbored the relics of Mary-Magdalena and became a major spiritual centre on the Santiago of Compostella pilgrim way.
It was restored by Viollet-le-Duc. Take time to admire its imposing narthex before entering the great nave, flooded with light…The church is considered as one of the masterpieces of Romanesque architecture.
Picturesque. Ancient, its steep lanes of stone cottages perfectly restored, with lovely ramparts and medieval gates, it’s hard to believe that this north Morvan hilltop village overlooking the River Cure was completely abandoned and crumbling just 100 years ago. Since then it has been transformed in to a chic, upmarket little haven of tourism, boasting top-quality restaurants, expensive hotels, art galleries and the usual craft shops.
But the reason for it all, the awesome Basilique Sainte Marie-Madeleine (Basilica of Mary Magdalene) has remained unscathed by the commercialism.
Clinging to the hillside, lovely medieval houses line the main street.
